Similarly, it was difficult to demonstrate that the resource workers' intervention made a noticeable impact on the extra heating which many families needed because of their child's poor health or restricted mobility. The help which the resource workers gave with this was often in the context of a much bigger set of problems concerning housing adaptations or modernization and, as we shall see in Chapter 7, solutions to these problems were sometimes delayed beyond the end of the project. Nevertheless the resource workers did record some instances where obtaining additional heating was a discrete, simple task:

Mrs S. very worried because Peter has such poor circulation and 'is always cold' - no heater in bedroom. Gas heater costs £65·20. Mrs S. to see her GP [to obtain a letter about the child's need for extra warmth] ... Received GP's note from Mrs S. about heater, and approached social services.

Sent letter to Family Fund supporting request [for portable gas fire] ... Reply from Family Fund received. Told Mrs T. to give fund exact details and she will get a cheque.
